2018 Ireland

609. An Aside – Ireland 2018

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive Shannon. Stay at Carrygerry. Visit Shannon, Bunratty Castle and other places the Sat Nav decides to take you to. Dine in Gallaghers, Bunratty (recommended).

Day 2 – Visit Quin Abbey, Craggaunowen, Knappogue (five years too late), Ennis incl Friary. Dine at Carrygerry (recommended).

Day 3 – Visit Adare (unfortunately) incl the An Post to send back the room key, then on to Tralee. Dine at Croi (recommended).

Day 4 – Annascaul and Dingle (avoiding the Conor Pass). Dine at Mary’s (excellent – despite us being late – sorry Mary). Quick trip up Conor Pass (cloud was down sadly)

Day 5 – Inch and Kerry Airport. Dine on Co-op pizzas at home (slightly burnt)

The Christmas 2016 present from one of our children and his partner was a two night stay gift. We were going to use it to visit our youngest in Plymouth, but somehow Ireland was chosen instead. We also decided to take up two invitations to stay with friends, Kim in Tralee and Mary & John in Dingle.

Because of circumstances, we planned next to nothing and winged it. This worked well with Quin Abbey but not so with Adare. Go to both and see what I mean.

These are my photos.

Ireland 2018 – Craggaunowen – Tim Severin’s St Brendan. This is the boat that proved you could row from Ireland to Newfoundland. We stayed in this lovely display building for some time. Until the rain stopped.

Ireland 2018 – Adare – Castle (Closed and unapproachable). We could not even get near the Friary. Dan said that the places that are signposted are often not so good and there are plenty of interesting places if you go look for them yourself.

Ireland 2018 – Annascaul – South Pole Inn. Tom Crean was one of Shackleton’s crew visiting somewhere (I couldn’t work out where). Across the way is a small park which commemorates the others.

Ireland 2018 – Rahinnane Castle on Teddy’s land. An example of ‘just came across it’. This is a hill fort, probably to stop wild animals getting to the store rather than a massive defense against the Vikings. Many of these were destroyed/disabled by Cromwell’s troops.

Ireland 2018 – A beach near Dingle – no idea where, we just followed a brown sign! You’ll see how high the waves are (actually the camera was really low).

Ireland 2018 – The Hillfort here (still signposted!) previously has fallen into the sea and a new attraction was needed …

Ireland 2018 – In 1970 there was a Sarah Mills / Robert Mitchum film called Ryan’s daughter. It was filmed in Dingle. Mrs WDEOD wanted to see the School House. We thought this was it – it wasn’t.

Ireland 2018 – By the side of the last shot was a gate that led over a rise and down to the sea. On the way was a spring with a crusader’s image. The jars you might see are of honey.

Ireland 2018 – And turning roun, the Ryan’s Daughter schoolhouse. I wondered why it had been built there in 1889 (there are no houses around). Turns out it was built in 1970 specifically for the film. There was a town too, but that was demolished.
