1977 Macau

541. The Portuguese Colony of Macau in 1977

Photographs of Macau in 1977 before it reverted to Macua SAR of China
Macau – October 1977

These images are taken from scans of slides photographed by Doris Shipway. She took them during a one day trip to the then Portuguese colony of Macau in 1977. On the same trip in 1977 she visited Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea.

The area reverted to Chinese control on 20/12/1999 a couple of years after Hong Kong. It is now named “Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China”

From the itinerary:

“Friday 28 October [1977 – Sunday 30 October 1977]

HONG KONG

… A trip by hydrofoil to the former Portuguese colong of Macao (sic) is recommended and you will find the old colonial buildings in striking contrast to twentieth century Hong Kong.”

The distance was about 40 miles.

Thanks so much for posting these! I love old Macau

  2. Thanks Ben. I’ll edit the captions accordingly. The whole set should be of Macau – the photos are in mounts with printed dates and shot numbers which mostly means I can group them correctly as there are printing differences. Sometimes things go wildly wrong however … Chris
